About Flightmaps

Flightmaps is an independent flight-route reference covering 6,072 airports and 67,000+ direct commercial routes worldwide. We publish interactive maps, airport pages, route pages, and travel utilities — all free to use, no signup, no ads-from-hell.

Data sources

Our route graph is built from a blend of authoritative public sources, refreshed on a rolling cadence:

  • OpenFlights.org — historical airport + route corpus (CC BY-SA 3.0).
  • OurAirports — airport metadata, ICAO codes, runway info (Public Domain).
  • OpenSky Network — live aircraft position telemetry (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).
  • Travelpayouts — affiliate-network route + price feeds (commercial licence).
  • AeroDataBox — live flight schedules via api.market (commercial licence).
  • Henley Passport Index — passport visa-free counts, refreshed quarterly.

Editorial process

Article content on airport and route pages is produced by a multi-agent editorial pipeline that combines a writer persona, a fact-checker pass against the underlying route data, and an SEO/quality gate (minimum 700 words, factual claims sourced to the airport's known route list). Articles that fail quality gates are not published.

Every article carries a dateModified timestamp on its byline (visible) and in its schema.org/Article markup. When the underlying route data refreshes — for example, when a new direct service is added — the affected pages are reflowed and the timestamp updates.

Methodology — Reach Score

Each airport gets a Reach Score from 0 to 99, computed as a weighted blend of:

  • Direct destinations — number of airports reachable non-stop.
  • Continental diversity — how many of the six inhabited continents you can fly to non-stop.
  • Average flight distance — long-haul reach as a connectivity proxy.

The score is recomputed whenever the underlying route graph refreshes. We document any methodology changes in our public changelog.

Affiliate disclosure

Some links — specifically the "Check Prices" call-to-action on route pages — redirect to partner booking sites (Kiwi.com, Skyscanner, Aviasales). When you complete a booking after following one of those links, we may receive a commission. This does not change the price you pay or which routes are surfaced. We do not promote routes or airlines based on commission rates.
