Why AMS punches above its weight
Schiphol's single-terminal design is the secret. There are no inter-terminal shuttles, no monorails, no terminal-change anxiety. You walk from one gate to another. Combined with KLM's deep network and the SkyTeam alliance, AMS routinely shows up in the cheapest itineraries between North America and Europe — and increasingly to Africa and Asia too.
Practical reality
- One terminal, three departure halls. Each hall has its own check-in but they all funnel into the same airside.
- Schengen vs. non-Schengen. Plan for an extra 10–15 minutes at the border crossing if you're connecting between the two zones.
- Fast train to the city. The station is directly under the terminal. Centraal Station is a 15-minute ride.
Where AMS shines
Africa, particularly East and Southern Africa, is unusually well-served from AMS thanks to KLM's historical network. North America is dense — Schiphol is one of the few European hubs with non-stop service to multiple US secondary cities. And short-haul connections across Northern Europe are quick and reliable.
Watch out for
Peak summer departures from AMS have struggled with security wait times in recent years. Build in extra time during July and August. Off-peak, it's one of the most efficient airports in the world.
