Why IST became a global player
Geography. Like Dubai, Istanbul sits at a natural crossroads — between Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Turkish Airlines built a network strategy of connecting secondary cities in each of those regions through IST, which means IST often has direct service to cities that no other major hub serves.

- One enormous terminal. Walking distances are significant — gates can be 20+ minutes from the security exit.

Where IST has the strongest network
Africa is the headline. Turkish Airlines serves more African destinations than any other carrier, often as the only direct option from Europe. The Caucasus, Central Asia, and secondary cities in the Middle East are also unusually well-covered. For routes between, say, Lagos and Tashkent, IST is often the most efficient single connection point on Earth.
Connection times
Allow 90 minutes for international-to-international connections. The terminal is large but well-organized, and Turkish Airlines is generally reliable about minimum connection time guarantees.
